Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and Australian schools are starting to notice. It is easy to learn, low impact, inclusive across abilities, and needs very little court space. For PE teachers looking for an activity that gets every student involved, it is hard to beat. This guide covers why pickleball works so well in schools and how to bring it into your program.

Why Pickleball Suits School PE Programs

The barrier to entry is genuinely low. A student can have a rally going within their first lesson, which means engagement stays high and nobody is standing on the sideline feeling out of their depth. The underhand serve, slower ball, and smaller court make it accessible to students who might struggle with faster racquet sports.

It also scales. You can run pickleball with a class of 30 by setting up multiple mini courts across a basketball or netball court. That keeps active participation high and waiting time low, which is exactly what you want in a PE lesson.

The Skills Students Build

  • Hand eye coordination and timing
  • Teamwork and communication through doubles play
  • Movement, balance, and spatial awareness
  • Inclusive participation across mixed ability groups
  • Sportsmanship and rotation etiquette

What Equipment You Actually Need

Pickleball is cheap to set up compared with most school sports. At minimum you need paddles, balls, and a way to mark courts. Portable nets work well if you do not have permanent ones, and lines can be marked with tape or floor markers on an existing indoor court.

For paddles, durability matters more than anything in a school setting. Equipment gets daily use across multiple classes, so a well built paddle pays for itself. Many schools choose a matching set of custom pickleball paddles for schools branded with their crest or house colours, which makes the game feel official and helps with equipment tracking. You can also see our full paddle range if you want to compare options first.

Setting Up Your First Lessons

  1. Start with the basics. Teach the underhand serve, the two bounce rule, and the non volley zone before introducing scoring.
  2. Use mini courts. Split your space into several small courts so every student is active.
  3. Play doubles. It keeps more students involved and lowers the physical demand on each player.
  4. Rotate often. Quick rotations keep energy up and let students play with different partners.

Taking It Beyond the Classroom

Once pickleball lands with students, it tends to grow. Schools are running it at lunchtime clubs, house carnivals, and inter school competitions. Branded paddles in house colours add a real sense of identity to those events. If you are thinking about a school wide rollout, custom equipment is worth considering early.
