Keeping secondary students engaged in PE is a real challenge. By high school, plenty of students have decided they are not sporty and quietly check out. Pickleball is one of the best tools for winning them back. It is competitive enough to interest the athletes, accessible enough to include everyone else, and social enough that students actually want to play. Here is how to make it work in a secondary school.
Secondary students often disengage from sports where the gap between the skilled and the unskilled is obvious. Pickleball narrows that gap. Placement and strategy matter more than raw power or speed, so a student who is not a natural athlete can still compete and win points. That changes the dynamic and brings reluctant students back into the game.
Older students respond to a bit of structure and stakes. Use formats that give the games meaning:
Secondary students take pride in running things themselves. Let senior students act as referees, scorekeepers, and tournament organisers. It builds leadership, takes pressure off staff, and gives students ownership of the program, which is one of the strongest ways to keep engagement high.
Pickleball keeps students moving through quick rallies, lateral movement, and constant changes of direction, but it feels like a game rather than a fitness drill. For students who avoid traditional running based PE, that distinction is the difference between participating and sitting out.
High school equipment gets heavy daily use across multiple classes and competitions, so build quality is the priority. Choose from fibreglass, carbon fibre, or raw carbon in midweight or heavyweight builds for older students. A set of school branded paddles in house colours adds identity to carnivals and inter school play. See our full paddle range to compare options.
